I’ve recently bought a Nexus One aka. the Google Phone.

I’ve been an iPhone user before. I used a jailbroken iPhone as the limitations of the original OS are just getting a bit old now. No multi tasking? Icon sorting on the springboard is a mess, camera is a joke. The list goes on…

While jailbreaking fixed some of these issues, like multitasking, and improving the camera slightly, one can tell that the iPhone wasn’t meant to do that natively. It is always a workaround. Therefore the user experience outside of apps was just not good.

The Android User Experience

Enter Android on the Nexus One: I am using the phone only since a few days but the difference in user experience and workflow is staggering. Basically, the ability of keeping all your essential apps open ALL the time makes all the difference. Somehow the Nexus One manages to keep 10 to 20 apps open at the same time without significantly slowing down. It’s mind-boggling…

What use is there too a chat program like Google Talk or Nimbuzz if it can’t be run in the background like on the iPhone?

Here is an example how this plays out in real life: Today I was finding my way to my appointment in the center of London via Google Maps, checking my friends Latitude, I saw that he was not at the agreed meeting point. I quickly (press home button long brings up task switcher or use 3rd party app) switched to Google Talk to catch him on his Android Device (HTC Hero) to clarify what happened. He tells me where exactly he is and I continue to use Google Maps to get his location. It’s just flawless back and forth switching between two programs that are meant to be used in multitasking mode.

This is how it would be on the iPhone: You simply cannot do what described above as quickly on the iPhone. You start Google Maps, you close it… If you were in a certain view you lose the state… Then you open the chat program, you wait for it to load, you chat, you close it and so on… It’s just boring!

The time of waiting for apps to boot up sucks. The jailbreak solution takes away the loading of the apps but as I said it just is not as smooth as the Android solution. The iPhone is simply meant to only run one app at a time. Which is ridiculous if you think about it.

Arranging the home screen & widgets

Another huge plus is the possibility to arrange your home screen exactly the way you like it.

I bought so many apps on iTunes that I kinda lost oversight over them. If I would’ve been able to group my apps that would’ve been tremendously helpful. Yes, you can move the icons but it’s a joke. You move one and all the other move as well… You don’t exactly get the result you were looking for -> poor experience.

Jailbroken iPhones can use folders but I found them to be a pain to set up and to actually use as they were slowing my iPhone down. Actually the whole jailbreak process slows the iPhone down in my experience – it’s a hack – a good one… but still a hack.

Android has all that stuff natively plus more. You can use folders, arrange icons freely and use widgets on top of that. So i have one screen for games, one screen for office and productivity related apps, one screen for multimedia and so on. It’s just the way it should be…

Essential Applications

Regarding the range of apps: I think that the iPhone definitely has the upper hand here. There are just more apps available on he iPhone. But the Android App Market is catching up really quickly.

Better Google App Integration

Another big plus is the better integration of Google Applications on Android as i use almost every Google App that there is for end users. So that is a massive reason for me to use Android. On the iPhone Gmail sucks (I didn’t like the native iPhone Mail Client btw.). On Android it ROCKS!

I have now basically all the core apps that i was using on the iPhone also on Android. Here is a list:

• Spotify
  Pretty much the same experience as on iPhone.
• Google Maps
  Latitude makes so much more sense now because you can just have google maps run in the background and your friends can always see where you are. On iPhone it is sh*t as you couldn’t have maps on all the time.
• Google Tasks
• Google Calendar
  Was browser-based on iPhone. This works just better.
• Google Talk
  Deeply integrated throughout Android. It is always just a click away. If your friends are on Google Talk you will find that you will chat more with them once you have an Android device.
• Seesmic
  Very nicely done Twitter App. Not as good as Tweetie 2, but good enough! I wish it had offline functions.
• Facebook
  Inbox is still missing. You get an alert when you have a message but it’ll direct you to the browser.
• Chomp SMS
  iPhone-like chat style SMS
• Google Buzz
  Browser app. This is the thing though. Browser apps work just so much better on Android. They even thought of removing the browser bar once it is fully loaded. On iPhone they sucked b/c there was too much screen real state covered by Safari.
• NewsRob
  A google reader client with offline reading capabilities. Great for reading stuff on the tube.
• Foursquare
• Nimbuzz
• YouTube
• Tube Downloader
  Downloads YouTube videos so you can watch them offline
• Evernote
• WordPress
  The WordPress client on Android is better than the one on iPhone. Part of this post was written in offline mode on the tube.
• AirControl
• Beam Reader
  I was using GoodReader on iPhone and i like BeamReader better. The line wrap feature is nicer, i think.
• Droidbox
  Dropbox client
• London Tube Status (with Widget for Tube Status)
• Photoshop
• VLC Remote
  This program I love. I only recently discovered it on the iPhone along with Airmouse. You can just lie on your bed or couch and remote control VLC on your computer. It’s awesome. The iPhone Version is better done… more features. And Airmouse I haven’t found for Android.

So yeah I have finally made the switch to Google Chrome. What made the big difference was the growing number of extensions.

I will still use Firefox but mostly for SEO and development stuff. There are too many SEO tools based on Firefox that I don’t see yet on Chrome.

The tools that prevented me so far from switching were a decent password manager which is now available with LastPass, Evernote Clipper and AdBlock+ as I use them a lot in Firefox.

Other extensions I’ve installed are the Docs PDF/PowerPoint Viewer and the Google Reader one click subscription button (I know RSS is oldschool but I still use it for some stuff). For SEO I have Chrome SEO which is quite rudimentary and for web development purposes I have Webpage Screenshot.

I’ll get rid of my good old trusted delicious bookmarks in favour of synced google chrome bookmarks… Good enough i guess. The only downside really is that they won’t show up in my Friend Feed Stream on the right.

Google Chrome is now also Greasemonkey ready as I read lately on Matt Cutts Blog.

Well I am gonna miss you Firefox, you’ve done well all those years…

In other News: I’ve invested a lot of time lately in PageRank Sculpting.

In the past it was a great technique to channel PR to where you want it in your site.

Then Google changed the game by starting to read javascript and treating the rel=nofollow tag differently.

SeoMoz then said (back in July 2009) that the new PageRank sculpting is link consolidation and then in December 2009 they conducted a test to figure out wether rel=”nofollow” is still relevant or not.

Their first result was a yes. But then they backtracked and basically said they don’t know because the test was flawed…

The whole thing is quite funny. Obviously there are other methods to channel page rank as well, but it’s still interesting to see what the outcome of their experiment will be.

I basically agree with with Graywolf if you don’t see a traffic drop don’t change anything.

When Google Wave came out i didn’t like it at all because i knew it meant adding another inbox to my list So i basically ignored it for weeks. Then my friends and colleagues started popping up in wave. They invited me to all kinds of waves and i still ignored it. LOL.

So they started working without me. Eventually i got in on the action and started WORKING with them on some waves. And that’s what it really is: You don’ t mail, you don’t instant message… you work with a group of people around a topic. Once you have a serious cause and once people don’t just test out all the formatting options Google Wave offers, the tool is actually really good, you know.

I was starting to understand the true value of Google Wave. It is the tool for collaboration around text. Not the best at emailing, not the best at messaging or any of that. Its specifically a collaboration tool. Maybe it’ll get better at email like stuff (filters, etc) or instant messaging stuff but it doesn’t really matter for me.

You WORK on a wave. There is no more emailing ABOUT work or about a document that needs to be changed. You do it directly in the wave. So really it safes a lot of time when it is used right.

Right now we are creating the training manual for a social media class we are about to give in Munich through my new social media consulting company greenYonda (german).

5 or so people work on the wave at the same time hammering out all the topics involved. For that kind of stuff Wave is really good.

In the past is used Skype a lot for that kind of collaboration work but now i have to admit Google Wave has the upper hand. With Skype you always needed another tool (like Google Docs). Also you can’t simply invite someone to a Skype conversation and he goes back in time to see what happened and how the conversation came about. Plus a wave is not a conversation… It’s so much more. For example you can edit everywhere and not just in your part of the wave. Whereas in Skype editing is very limited.

I think the time is ripe for me to use the word wave now. Instead of finding ways of describing what Google Wave does. A wave is wave. It’s not email, it’s not instant messaging and its not a document. It is a wave.

Once there are more plugins available that kind of collaboration is really possible in a lot of areas. Working together on code or graphics could be built on the basis of Wave.

Start using it!

Sooo…. time does not exist. Right?

There is no time. It is a fictional construct. You cannot show me time. What we perceive as time is actually thoughts. But thoughts are not real. There is no way of bringing back a past experience or experiencing an event in the future right now. They are just thoughts. Thoughts of the past are usually influenced by our emotions. So they are subjective aka. mostly pointless.

We can make predictions about the future but that doesn’t mean that they are right. In fact when it comes to business and especially when working in tech startups. They are almost NEVER right.

There is an old saying in tech that says to get the project time for any tech project you need to take the original estimation use the next higher time factor and multiply by 3.

So here is an example:
Original project time estimation: 30 days
Next higher factor is weeks. So it becomes 30 weeks. Multiplied by 3 = 90 weeks.

In my experience that is usually true for tech company projects. There are simply too many variables and what is called invisible threads (Another path or problem of a project that is only revealed when you reach a certain point in the project)

So what point is there in planning. There is none. It’s basically a meaningless excercise to make people feel secure. And when you approach the deadline it makes people insecure. And all because you didn’t live up to a purely fictional estimation… LOL!

In fact i recommend not to plan or if you have to plan then do it without taking time into account.

I recommend:
Knowing what you want to do and doing it no matter how much time and money it costs.

I know it sounds crazy but think about:

If you follow that piece of advice i am pretty sure a lot of projects would get stopped immediately. Most projects only exist because there was a fictional assumption that said it’s gonna take x amount of time and costs x amount of £££.

It also  means you have to know exactly what you are working on OR accept failure as a possibility from the beginning. But how else are you going to learn? So in fact you even DETACH from the outcome of the project. Hahaha!

So why are you doing the project then at all? Well because of the only acceptable reason: You enjoy the work and it makes you happy -> ALWAYS!

So since i am doing it like this I ALWAYS WORK ON WHAT IS IMPORTANT AND FUN TO ME.

This is then also the reason i earn more money because my heart is in it -> always!

When i work for a company i try and apply these principles as much as possible. If i am a partner in a company or have a say in the company i ALWAYS refuse to plan and i am only working on stuff that we want no matter how much it costs.

The company in return can be sure that i deliver top-notch stuff and it’s always in time … LOL. “In time” get it? .

So instead of talking part in long planning sessions and talks about vision etc. I get stuff done ALL THE TIME. Instead of thinking what is important in 1 year i think about what is important RIGHT NOW and work on it. Baby steps all the way.

A word about company visions:

The funny thing with start-ups in tech is that they change their vision usually a lot over time. With todays development methods, a companies reason of existence changes sometimes within days. So why bother… A vision is like a cage. It confines you to work within a certain frame. So what if you start with a project and end somewhere completely different you thought you would? If it works it works.

So again: visions are not for me. I just judge the project and decide what is important on the fly. Then i work on that because it is important it NEEDS to get done anyway. As i said I ALWAYS work on important stuff that way.

A word about regular meetings:

Same thing… How do you know one week earlier that the meeting is what the company should be doing at the time when the meeting is planned. Well, you don’t! So what’s the point.

When something needs to be said. Do it NOW. Obviously it’s important so why not do it now? If it’s not important enough to get people out of their current activity… well then… I say: don’t bother at all. Write an email or bring it up when it is actually important.

    Good for A/B split tests and increasing conversion. Tim Ferriss once again has a good post about it.
16. Crazyegg
    This tool is what the google analytics site overlay always should have been. They deliver really good data to see where people click on your website. See the demo. Click on Heatmap and Confetti. Tim Ferriss has also shown a good overview in his “How To Blog” Video.
17. Usertesting
    Get cheap user testing via this website. You pay 29$ per user test. For that you get a flash video that shows you the interaction with the website as well as the spoken commentary of the user.
18. fivesecondtest
    this is a really good tool to see if people understand the core message of your website. You upload a picture of your website and people review it for 5 seconds and then write down the 5 things that they remember about your website. you are gonna be surprised to see how little it actually is.
19. Browsershots
    This website enables you to check how your website looks on other systems and browser. They got everything from strange old Unix os up till the modern Mac OS.
20. Userfly
    Insert a line of JavaScript code into your website and get the possibility to play back every user session. You see mouse movement and pages visited just like you would be looking over their shoulder while they interact with your website. immensely helpful.
21. Chalkmark
    A tool like crazy egg. Heatmap style evaluation of your web site visitor. It provides something that google analytics would’ve done but didn’t. Great tool.

    Desktop-based Usability Tools

22. StomperNet Scrutinizer
    This tool allows you to simulate the squint test by blurring websites and then additionally only shows the area around your mouse in clear view. That helps you to get an idea where people would go first on your website when you test your website with people who don’t know your website and use that tool. In my opinion not as correct as real eye tracking or camera recording of interaction. It also resizes the browser window to a standard size like 1024 x 768 to check if your website complies.
23. Silverback for Mac only
    This software records user session plus iSight user video. So now you can do a user test (speak aloud or similar) record where the person has clicked on your website and also a video with their face and everything they have said. When you play it back you see everything at once. Very handy.

    Accessibility is a very important topic in usability. You want to make sure that as many as people  as possible are capable of viewing your content. That includes people who suffer from color blindness or other vision problems. Here are some tools that can help you check on that:

    These are tools by the W3C to make sure your Markup and CSS is fine as well as links. This is the bare minimum you can do to make your website accessible.

    Good web-based wireframe tool. The wire frames look like hand drawn sketches. Quite cool tool. To use it professionally you need to buy a subscription.

    Another web-based wire frame tool. Based in india. The tool is currently still in development.

    Helpful online wireframe testing tool. You can create wire frames that look like they are hand drawn and interlink them and assign actions to items on the page. Check out the demo.

    Very good looking wireframing app in beta stage. Liked it quite a lot.

    Highly efficient desktop based wireframe tool. Real good to use and simple to make wire frames. Trouble is, it’s pricey. I think a single licence comes for 500$. Check out the trial software if you like it.

    This book teaches how usability improvements of everyday things could be done. Great read as it gets you in the right mindset for usability improving anything

    This book is now quite old but the most of the stuff in there still applies. When you have read this book front to back you know everything to get started seriously in usability improving websites. Your not a pro but well equiped.
60. Usability Engineering
    Another classic by Jakob Nielsen. Easily readable information on usability testing and interface design. Well worth the time spent.
61. E-Commerce User Experience
    Now if you have an online shop (or applicable also to a lot of transaction based websites) THIS is the book you need. I know it’s quite expensive (when i bought it,  it was even more expensive) BUT i have never learned so much about design of shopping carts from any other resource. I can only recommend this book.
62. A Pattern Approach To Interaction Design
    A good introduction to the concept and usage of UI patterns.
63. Envisioning Information
    This book is awesome. I was a bit weak sometimes in that area but Tuftes book helped me a lot with it. Presenting information visually is super important in UI as it speaks to both halfs of the brain and makes people understand easier. A must read!
64. Don’t Make Me Think
    Loved this book as it made me much more aware of that core principle in everyday work. Don’t make the user EVER think is key to designing a usable interface. It all needs to be a natural flow. Reduction of unnecessary is as always key to get there… for the rest, read this book.
65. Homepage Usability: 50 Websites Deconstructed
    Now this book changed mostly my perception of home page real estate. I didn’t even know the word/concept but it makes a lot of sense to see your homepage as your most valuable real estate you gotta be ultra sharp about what you place on the homepage. This book takes a look at 50 of the biggest websites homepage and analyzes them to the maximum. Really helpful to solve the ever-present question on what to put on a homepage.
66. Prioritizing Web Usability
    Another Jakob Nielsen masterpiece. Pretty much an update of his latest usability findings. What was helpful was that he addressed the question i always hear in most projects that i work for: “Do we need usability testing”… Nielsen has some good answers on ROI of usability. But the main focus of the book is on giving a comprehensive view of the most important ui principles.
67. Eyetracking Web Usability
    Don’t wanna spam Jakob Nielsen stuff here but i find his books just so useful. This book is about his findings in a  3 year-long eye tracking study where they looked at 1.5 Mil. instances of eye tracking. This book is so important to the average website owner because setting up a eye tracking test is still quite complicated so we usually don’t have access to that kind of data. Well this book is here to aid that…

Lately i have experimented with a completely unstructured day and way of handling information. It’s inspired a lot by twitters stream, 4 hour work week and a bit also by David Allens mind like water. Just like with twitter where there is no sorting of tweets i simply let information flow on its own as much as possible.

On top of that stream i have my bigger life goals that i am always focused on anyways. This way the information that finds its way into my focus is always somehow aligned automatically.

So the title is not completely correct. In a lot cases it’s actually not stopping information management but having the information sorted automatically or the sorting effort is reduced to an absolute minimum.

Meetings

Generally I am trying to avoid those as much as possible and i don’t do in person meetings. Only Skype or phone. The ones i have i always set to the same time in the week so i can remember them without writing them down. I also put them always in those days and hours where i know i will be online with Skype running. So when the other party contacts me, the meeting starts.

To-do lists:

I don’t use a to-do list because I  have my current goals constantly in mind and i derive the things i want to do from there every day. Since i am constantly working towards those goals my activities align naturally. Stuff that i forget either pops up again (mostly other people bringing it up) or it was not important or related to what my goals are.

Email

In basically stopped organizing email altogether apart from deleting and archiving. I use Gmail with some filters set up from the past that put labels on emails but i could also just work with a completely unaltered setup of Gmail. In those rare cases i go back to old email i simply use the search. I don’t respond to emails a lot. I don’t want to encourage email discussions, so i archive them directly and mostly never hearing about the topic again. The important ones i respond and archive (Gmail labs feature “send and archive”).

Another reason i don’t do o a lot of emails anymore has to-do with systems like yammer or prologue 2 that a lot of companies i work for now use. That means that there is no old school email discussion anymore but a twitter like stream of information that eliminates most emails and does not need sorting or managing.

Documents

I try and avoid creating old school (MS Word) or even google documents as much as possible. I just found that they are not open enough so i am doing mostly blog posts instead of old school documents.

If information has to be in a document i can only do google docs as i don’t have an office suite anymore on my pc. I don’t file documents in google docs anymore i just use they search to go back to an old document.

MP3s

I have no MP3s If i listen to anything i do it online.

Images

Mostly on facebook and through tagging from other people. In case i create images i upload them to my unsorted Flickr stream.

Files

I don’t permanently save any computer files on my hard drive anymore. Everything is in the cloud. In those rare cases where i edit something locally i mostly send it via Gmail/yammer afterwards so its stored there. If its way too big i dump it sometimes in my amazon S3 jungle drive. I don’t sort it though (no folders) because so far i didn’t need to go back even once.

delicious has been called the graveyard of bookmarks. You bookmark something and never go back. So true in my case. So i just have given up on using bookmarks. I can remember the URLs i use (with the help of firefox awesome bar) for the rest i use bing (just kidding i use google).

Digg, Twitter, etc, very few RSS Subscriptions (only blogs that i absolutely find interesting but post very rarely)

Filmaster.com asked me to review their website. Overall it’s not to great now but i  think they are in beta mode. So they have still time to fix it.

So here it goes:

1. Main Purpose not easily understandable

   The main problem is that the purpose of the website is not easy understandable on the homepage. That needs to be fixed asap. Other wise you’ll loose too many visitors. Cut back on fluff EVERYWHERE.

2. Site is loading very slow

3. Movie recommendation engine gave me no recommendations

   After logging in via Facebook Connect i got to the movie recommendation engine. Instaed of showing example recommendations that can be refined afterwards you showed me a button saying  “compute recommendations” which apparently also might take up to 5 minutes. Firstly 5 mins is waaaay to long. Cache them somehow or whatever but you gotta bring them faster. Secondly even worse i got NO RESULTS. It sad “No recommendations, sorry.” Now if you need input form the use first another method would be to guide them DIRECTLY into the data gathering process (probably rating movies, pointing out movies they liked). So now i have no clue on what basis you are recommending movies to me.
   
   
   

4. Way too much text and stuff on the homepage.

   People have incredible little time these days to grasp what a website is about. I think its around 8 seconds. So you have to cut away EVERYTHING that distracts from the core purpose of the website.

   

   • For instance to grasp what “The Planet” link is about i have to read 1.5 lines of text? That is not good. The link should be descriptive enough.
   • Rate movies should probably be “Movie Recommendations”
     What is not good that when i click on it i have to register first. Especially not if its called Rate Movies. The point is that no one will read the explanatory text and when they click on it they expect explanation of the feature which they do not get. Instead they are asked to register. Why register though? So far for the average NEW user the website has shown NO value – so why would you register? So you lose a lot of people there.
   • there is more but didn’t have the time to write about it…

5. Search doesn’t stand out

   The search has very light coloring and does not jump into the eye at all. Yet it is one of the most important means of navigation on your website. It’s gotta be more attention grabbing.

6. Don’t be clever, use the established stuff

   A lot of times you guys try to be clever. For instance:

   • What does “The Planet” mean?
     I have to read the description to grasp it. Nobody has that kind of time.
   • You put “You are looking at Filmaster | pre-premiere version” First of all i know that i am looking at Filmaster and 2nd it’s called “beta”. There are sooo little standards on the web. Lets try and use at least the quasi standards.
   • Under the forum headline on the homepage you put the username above the headline. Nobody knows that these are usernames.

7. Some Links not recognizeable

   Some of the Links are the same color as the rest of the text. While this might look better from a design p.o.v. its horrible for the user experience. I have to mouse over stuff to figure out if it’s a link -> Don’t make me think.

There is more stuff but i didn’t have the time to write it all down… But i think one gets the main point. Site purpose not easily understandable.

In order to fix it:

Either start working with a usability expert on your website or start reading up on all books from Jakob Nielsen and Tog. Here is a list of interaction design ressources by Scott Berkun.
